Do you want the definition of war crimes as the three different kinds as listed in Cases or is there just one overall definition you would like?

Its very difficult for me to just produce long lists of definitions of terms we went over in class for long periods of time. I'm happy to refresh your memories, or explain a specfic question, but I won't just reprint my notes here.

Diversity and Tolerance were clearly defined in Kelleher & Klein (diversity in the first chapter - it's the title of the whole damn section of the course - , tolerance as part of "cultural pluralism" in the second).

The difference between Patriotism and Nationalism is, once again, clearly defined in the book, and topic we have discussed more than once in the semester. Both are related to the "State Primacy" perspective.

South Africa's "Truth and Reconciliation" tribunals and Pinochet were discussed with respect to alternatives (and complications) to the ICC. Given what the ICC is trying to do, both the South African and the Chilean approach would violate the spirit (if not the letter) of the ICC, and that's somewhat troubling for supporters of the ICC.

Child Labor was mentioned as another part of "globalism", and has nothing to do with Chile.

Davos Culture, Faculty Club, and McWorld are all paths to globalism/cultural imperialims. We discussed them in class.

Rothkopf was mentioned in the Taking Sides book, and I expanded on that in class. Rothkopf is a cultural imperialist (who worked for Clinton, in the State Department), who firmly believes that American values are the best in the world and that the US has economic and moral imperatives to force the rest of the world to adopt our values.

"Benefits and Costs" of what? I suspect I'm refering to the previous line, but you'll have to be more specific.

The link between the entire "cases" chapter on "the democratic peace" and the discussion of "globalism" and cultural imperialism is an ongoing argument over whether democracy is or is not something that everyone in the world wants/should have, or whether it (like other cultural beliefs) is something that we (the US/west) believe in, and other cultures don't.

The "role in war on terrorism" is meant to get you thinking about how American domestic politics decisions relating to our own laws on detainment, right, trials, etc. affect our ability to win/fight the global war on terrorism. We talked about this many times in class yesterday.

As for the democracy/paine/locke question, I'm very confused. Can you restate what you are trying to say, so I can understand what you are asking?

the ICC is set to prosecute "war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity"; if you can know the difference between those, that is sufficient (but don't kill yourself for this).

Will we need to know the criticisms of globalism, state primacy or cultural pluralism?

Should we know the particulars concerning Bosnia and Rowanda?

Blogger Dr. David Hauser said...

No, you don't need to know real particulars of critcisms of the three perspectives (globalism, state. prim., cult. pluralism); you should know pros and cons of them.

No, you don't need to know specific details of Bosnia and Rwanda, just generalities (where, when, why, etc.) in very broad terms.

Does the "Truth and Reconciliation" of South Africa deal with the televised confessions, and how justice is different everywhere in world? And what is Pinochet and Chile..I can't find them in my notes.

Yes, the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission is about how justice changes in various parts of the world, and how sovereignty allows that (which is why it is sort of opposed to the ICC, but also sorta not); I have no idea what the television comment means.

We talked for a while about Pinochet in class, just after we finished talking about the South African case.

I'm a little confused on Revenge of the Losers...I thought that it was win the majority of the state with no power, finds a way to take over the government and such and it turn it into a democracy...am I leading in the right direction?

Just to be sure, did the Patriot Act change the FISA so that now you can use the information in courts. And I'm not sure how the Patriot Act changed NSL.

Where can i find Fukuyama: "The End of History"

7:36 PM

"Revenge of the Losers" was the cute name given to one of the five categories of states that have transitioned to being a democracy, but have either fallen back or are in danger falling back. "Losers" are those elements of the old regime who liked the power/prestige/money of their old position, and operate to try to get it back. Sort of like the Baathists in Iraq, today.

Yes, the Patriot Act (in the news today, by the way) did change FISA to allow FISA-derived information to be used in "normal" court procedings. Yes, the Patriot act change the "National Security Letters", though legally the change to allow the FBI to hold onto the information past the end of the investigation was an Executive branch change, not in the Patriot Act. An irrelevant difference.

Fukuyama's "End of History" wasn't an assigned reading: I only talked about it in class. You should, however, be able to find a copy of it on the web, somewhere. Try googling it, and see what you come up with.
