What are the justifications for terrorism? I cannot find them in my notes.
Sierra Leone is one of the three conflicts talked about in the oddball Snow (the Cases book) chapter. We talked about it last class.
Ethnic conflict was a long discussion relating to the Huntington "Clash of Civilization" article. I went through Huntington's argument, described where it was successful at explaining the world (and where it failed), then talked about several complaints/opposed arguments relating to it.
Sponsorship of terrorism relates to the idea of "state sponsored terrorism", which is when a state acts to back up a terrorist group for it's own reasons. We talked about historical examples of this, and and why states have chosen to do this.
Justifications of terrorism asks you to think of the reasons that states and terrorist organizations have used to justify their actions, and why terrorists choose to use terror (as opposed to other forms of political disagreement - violent and not). In a roundabout way, it relates to the "one mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter" discussion.
I don't think my interpretation of Anarchy vs. Heirarchy is correct. Could someone explain?
and, are we supossed to know specifics for Terrorist Attacks, (eg. 9/11)?
Mary,
Anarchy versus Hierarchy is somewhat complicated. There is an explanation in the Kelleher & Klein book. The key is that the world is "anarchic" because sovereignty disallows any hierarchy (all states, as sovereign, are equal). Recongnize that "anarchy" in this context means something entirely different from the normal dicionary definition.
As for terrorism and 9/11, yes you should know the general outline of what happened. I didn't teach it directly, since I figured it had happened recently enough that students would know about it.
